Monica Joyce Thompson
Miss Colorado 2019
Monica is from Aurora, Colorado and she attended Grandview High School. She graduated summa cum laude from Oklahoma City University where she was the first student to complete a double honors major in Vocal Performance and Music Theater. She is currently pursuing a Certificate in Nonprofit Management at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
During her undergraduate career, Monica performed in numerous theatrical productions, completed an internship with Children's Miracle Network Foundation, broke fundraising records as the Philanthropy Chairwoman of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, and volunteered as a music teacher at a school for homeless children. She was also part of OCU's prestigious honors program, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and was consistently on the President's Honor Roll.
Growing up, Monica played soccer and took piano lessons for over ten years and also played the violin for three years. She discovered her love for vocal performance and acting while in high school and has placed in the top three in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition for Classical and Musical Theater on several occasions. In addition, she won the Colorado Shakespeare Acting Competition and performed for more than 5,000 people as the lead in the musical "Ragtime" at the Bellco Theater in Denver.
Monica's Social Impact Initiative is Building Strong Girls. After growing up with her sisters in a primarily single-parent household, Monica recognized the importance of strong women in her life and the value of mental and physical health. Monica has won the Miss America Community Service Award three years in a row and has raised over $21,000, volunteered more than 500 hours, and closely mentored 50+ girls with organizations like Girls on the Run. She has worked with several other organizations including Girl Scouts of Colorado, Community Educational Outreach (teaching math and English to women transitioning out of prison), the Gamma Phi Beta Foundation, and Compassion International.
