MAOTeen!

Hello Everyone!
I am back from the most amazing experience of MY LIFE!!! I just spent two weeks in Orlando, Florida competing for the Title of Miss America's Outstanding Teen and it was a journey and experience that will last a life time!!  I arrived in Florida on August 20th and was there till the 29th!  I got to do SO many neat things on my trip to Orlando! When I first arrived I received the opportunity to do a Tony Bowls photo shoot!  I got to wear an adorable purple flower dress and strut it off in front of the camera!!  That same night all of the contestants went to a Red Carpet welcome party, in which we honored the amazing, and super sweet, Jeanette Morlean.  We also got to dance the night away on the dance floor and I had a blast meeting all the girls!

The next few days were so busy! We rehearsed every day, with occasional games of Taradactal…a fun game all of us girls made up!!  We got to go to Midevil Times, be introduced and watch the show.  The next day we rehearsed and then went to Planet Hollywood!  It was such a blast and I enjoyed singing my heart away with New York, Virginia, Florida, and Nebraska!

The next morning was my interview which went pretty much amazing!! I enjoyed expressing who the real Lexie O'Dowd was and my passion for the Miss AmericaOrganization. That night was my first night of competition!  I competed in fitness and I was so proud of myself that I did a FULL push up - woo hoo!! The next day I competed in talent, which went the best it could go.  I was so engrossed in the moment and just felt at home on the national stage!  It was such an amazing feeling performing up there, and I just reminded myself to "Don't Stop Beliven";)

The next night was evening wear and onstage question!  I was very pleased with my competition that night.  I related my onstage question back to my platform and I think it was the best I have ever answered an onstage question!!

The next day all of us girls got a spa day with the makeup sponsor, Artistry.  It was such a blast and I enjoyed spending so much time with all the girls; they truly are ALL outstanding teens!!  That night we got to go to a Gala and dance the night away again it was such a blast!!  I also talked to Miss America 2008 Kirsten Haglund.  She is such a beautiful person inside and out and I enjoyed every minute of speaking to her!  She also told me she wants to come to Denver - YAY!

The next day was finals!!  We rehearsed all day, but at lunch I received the opportunity to go with a few other girls to lunch with Miss America, Caressa Cameron!  It was so much fun and such an awesome opportunity to talk personally with Miss America.  The final night did not turn out the exact way I had hoped it would, but as I look back on my whole experience I would not have changed one thing.  I made amazing friends, New York, Alison Stroming and North Carolina, Kayla Hollingsworth, who I now consider to be two of my closest friends.  I grew so close to both of them and they are amazing role models and have such great hearts and heads on their shoulders.  I also grew as a person in this experience.  I learned to overcome adversity and trust in God that he has a plan for me in life.  I also really grew in my self confidence.  I reminded myself that nothing is impossible if you put your heart into it. That is just what I did, every single moment in Orlando… I put 110% and walked away with a state of peace that I really achieved so many goals and did the absolute best I could.  It truly was a life changing experience and I challenge you to DARE TO DREAM and exceed beyond your boundaries because I have learned impossible is nothing when your heart is in it!

I would like to thank a few people for their constant love and support for getting me to where I was for MAOT.  Suzi and Katee, thank you for really just being the BEST.  You really got me ready to be the best Lexie I could be for this competition and I enjoyed every moment that I spent with you in preparation and really thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything!  Mom and Dad, you are my the best parents I could ever ask for.  Thank you for giving up your entire summer to help me.  There is absolutely nothing more I could ask for and I am so blessed to be raised by you.  Keely, thank you for really teaching me to believe in myself and remember that this is about the journey and being a servant to God. Katie Layman, thank you for helping me to bring out that FIERCENESS on the stage, you totally helped me rock my dance and I really did thanks to you! You are the best!  Melaina, where would I be today without your constant love and advice!?  I really am too blessed to have known someone like you and be sisters with you!  Thank you so much for supporting me and really helping me to believe in my dreams!  Ohhh, and also for sitting in the same spot all four nights of competition so your Little Lexie could find her Melaina in the audience!  You truly are the greatest and I look up to you so much.  Janelle, thank you tons for the advice you gave me about Nationals and being there for me I love you!!  Jeff Doland, thank you for getting my interview to the best it could be.  I would not have done nearly as good without your help! Thank you so much!  Wayne, I will never forget all those pep talks at visitation you gave me.  Really, they truly inspired me to know I could accomplish my dreams. Thank you so much for supporting me!  Lastly, God I am so blessed in my life because of what you have given me I can't thank you enough!  And I constantly reminded myself, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."  This is all part of the journey, my experience at nationals was something I will never forget but I know it was just a stepping stone in my Journey as MCOT.  I am now fully aware there is a plan for everything in life, and trusting in Him is most important. I am so excited to serve Colorado for the rest of my year, and I am ready to make a difference in the lives of others, one step at a time!  Thank you again to everyone I love you all!
Love always,

Orlando!

Last Sunday, I arrived back in the beautiful state of Colorado from Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant in Orlando, Florida, and I could not possibly be more proud of Miss Colorado’s Outstanding Teen, Lexie O’Dowd.  She had an incredible amount if energy in her fitness competition and she was the only one in her group to do a full push up, while looking at the audience.  She made me proud as she danced her heart out during her talent competition and she shined more than I have ever seen her shine in her evening gown.  I have never been so honored to wear this Miss Colorado sash and crown as I was on Saturday night, because everyone knew that Lexie was my teen.  People I have never met before would approach me and tell me how blown away they were by my sister titleholder.  Lexie, you are the sweetest, purest, most intelligent and beautiful teenager I have ever known and you make being Miss Colorado that much sweeter, because I get to reign with you.  I am so proud of you and your performance at MAOT and you will forever and always by my Miss America’s Outstanding Teen!

I met the Miss America Class of 2011 in Orlando and they are an extraordinary group of girls.  I had an amazing time with all of the state titleholders and I cannot wait to see everyone again when we compete at the Miss America Pageant in January in Las Vegas!  The first night in Orlando, we were able to go onstage and introduce ourselves to the audience.  We were in alphabetical order and I love my line mates, Miss California, Arianna Afsar and Miss Connecticut, Brittany Decker.

On the second night of preliminary competition, the princesses went on stage and they were all so cute!  I am very excited for my princesses to come to Las Vegas and support me there.  Seeing their faces will make the experience that much better.

Thursday morning at 8:00 AM, I headed to Salon 16 in the Rosen Centre Hotel to film my original 60 second segment of Why I should be the next Miss America.  It was so much fun creating my personal statement and the content will be a surprise to you all.  There may or may not be voting attached to this video when it airs on ABC.com and other internet sites around mid-October, so  I will keep you posted as more information is made available to me.

Thursday night was the third night of preliminaries and before the show all of the Miss America contestants went to Maggiano’s Little Italy for a wonderful dinner. It was co-sponsored by Mary Sullivan, the Executive Director of the Miss Florida Pageant and one of my judges at Miss Colorado, as well as Regalia, who is the Miss Colorado Organization gown sponsor and also sponsors several other state titleholders. We all enjoyed the dinner and the opportunity to relax and get further acquainted.

On Friday, competition was not taking place and the Miss contestants definitely had a full day planned.  We began our day at 7:30 AM loading the bus and going to Disney World!  My first time at Disney World was this past May for college graduation and my 24th birthday, so it was very reminiscent for me.  Even though I had just met Belle three months earlier, I still couldn’t wait to see her again, since I am still a kid at heart!  In the morning, I participated in two different interviews that will be used for a contestant video for Disney.  It was definitely hot and humid, so if you can see the camera man’s reflection in my face, you know why!  Whoever said beauty queens don’t sweat, they glisten, may be proven wrong soon enough.  After the interviews, we had a chance to ride the Tea Cups, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder, Haunted Mansion, and Buzz Lightyear.  Thanks to the Buzz Lightyear ride, I can truthfully tell you if you have an alien problem and need me to exterminate them with my laser gun, I’m your girl!  After the promotional items were complete and we got to ride several of the best rides at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, we made our way back to the hotel to get ready for “An Evening with Miss America” at the Siegel Estate.  The house was beautiful and the company was fantastic.  There was a live auction to raise money for the Miss America Scholarship Fund, so thank you to all who so generously donated.  You are helping so many young women grow and succeed and I am very thankful for the many opportunities I have received through this scholarship program.

At last, Saturday came and it was the final day in Orlando.  We had a contestant orientation in the morning where we had the opportunity to ask Miss America 2010, Caressa Cameron questions about her year as Miss America and any advice she had that would help us prepare for competition.  As the day progressed, I was filled with anticipation and excitement for the final show!  I loved wearing a beautiful Jovani evening gown from Regalia and I felt like a million bucks in it!  Thank you David and Carry from Regalia for being the best in the business!  The final show was wonderful and Lexie was amazing and all of us in the audience couldn't have been more proud of her!!  The newly crowned winner of Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2010 is Lacey Russ from Oklahoma.  I know it takes hard work and dedication to succeed at a national level, so congratulations to Lacey and I wish her a year of amazing success and unforgettable memories!

Throughout this experience, I have learned several things, including: My Outstanding Teen, Lexie O’Dowd, is one of the strongest little girls I know and again, I could not be more proud of her performance and to be her Miss!  Miss Florida, Jaclyn Raulerson, I am convinced we are sisters separated when we were teeny little babes.  I love you and cannot wait to see you again!  Miss Texas, Ashley Melnick, Miss District of Columbia, Stephanie Williams, Miss Louisiana, Kelsi Crain, and Miss Ohio, Becky Minger, thank you girls so much for making my experience in Orlando an unforgettable one!  I loved getting to know each and every one of you girls and I miss you already!  May the wolf pack live on!  To the Miss America Class of 2011, you are all incredible young women and I feel so blessed to be a part of this unbelievable group of young women.  I enjoyed spending the last week with all of you and I am thrilled to see you again in January!

I started a theme with my last blog, so I will update you all who are counting down the days with me… only 136 days until Miss America 2011 is crowned!  Thank you to my friends and family for consistently being such a great support system and I cannot wait to make you all proud on the national stage!

Until next time,

Melaina Shipwash

Orlando!

It's so amazing that a little over a month ago I was named Miss Colorado's Outstanding Teen!! Wow I just can't believe how much my life has changed since then and what a blessing it has truly been! Since I was crowned, I have been given the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at a Sky Sox game (too bad I bounced it to the plate!).  I have worked closely with my platform Special Olympics and have been given the privilege to work with the amazing Special Olympic athletes, who have already changed and humbled my life.  I have met Jane Norton a talented woman running for Senate who is so intelligent.   It was such an honor to meet her!   I have worked with amazing children with disabilities at the kick off for the Jet Set Fashion Show. The children were soooo adorable and I had a blast walking down the isle of the fashion show with them!!  It was also fun to attend the Air Force Academy Golf Outing that was a fundraiser for the YMCA that provides programs for military families! This past month has truly changed my life more than I can imagine and I have been given the opportunity to do so many things to help our community and meet so many influential people in Colorado!

These past 43 days have also been VERY hectic getting ready for Miss America's Outstanding Teen!! I leave on August 20th and I have had so much fun preparing my wardrobe, working on my dance, and meeting with Don Baker and so many great people who are helping me prepare for the National Pageant! It has been a great experience and I cannot wait to compete in three weeks!  All I know is it is all about the journey, and as I go to Orlando, I will constantly remind myself to be the best Lexie I can be and remember God has a plan for me throughout everything!  Suzi Doland, Katee Mink, Jeff Doland, Katie Layman, Janelle, Shelly, my mom, Keely, Melaina, Kayla, and so many others have already been so much help to me for getting ready and I hope to do everyone proud!

As I look back on winning this title; I am more and more thankful for this opportunity!  It has been more than I could ever imagine and most importantly it's been a great experience of impacting the lives of others! Well, as I rap up things here, remember to watch me compete online at the Miss America's Outstanding Teen website on August 24th,25th,26th, and finals 28th!! I am so excited to be heading to Orlando and I will keep everyone informed on how it goes! Thanks to everyone who has been there supporting me!

Love always,

Hello Everyone!

It has been six weeks since I have received the title as Miss Colorado Teen, and I have been very busy! Time seems to be flying by.   I have had many exciting appearances that I have been able to attend alongside Melaina and Lexie! One of my favorite appearances was the Ed McCaffrey Dare to Play/ Dare to Cheer camp for the Global Down Syndrome Foundation. This event was designed to teach young people with Down Syndrome to play football, and cheer for the players. It was near and dear to my heart, as I would like to become a Special Education teacher when I am older. I had so much fun, and so did the players!  I feel very blessed to be able to spend time in the presence of such wonderful people.   Along with the camp, I attended a kick-off party for the Jet Set fashion show which is partnered with the Global Down Syndrome Foundation. I had a blast walking down the runway with the kids, and am excited for the fashion show taking place in October.

In July, I was able to throw the first pitch of the Sky Sox game. With two brothers, I have been a spectator at many baseball games, but was still nervous!  I did manage to make the throw to home plate, so was happy with the results.

We recently attended a luncheon at the Air Force Academy for the Stars and Stripes Golf Tournament, which was a fundraiser for military families.  Most recently Lexie and I were invited to the Comfort Dental VIP party at the Comfort Dental Amphitheatre.  We met some wonderful people, and ended the evening watching Tim McGraw in concert.  Thank you so much to Comfort Dental, you are so generous!  I have had the most amazing times with my beautiful sisters. I love you girls so much!

In September, Melaina, Lexie and I will be participating in the Relay for Life, for the American Cancer Society. It is a 24 hour event being held at Webster Lake in Northglenn that benefits and recognizes those who are fighting, have fought, or lost their battles with cancer.  Everyone is welcome to join us in our walk.

Summer is ending quickly, and we will be going back to school very soon.   I am very excited to start my career as a high school student, but nervous as well.  I am so happy that I have made some amazing friends that will help guide me through this experience.   I am looking forward to what is still to come.  I will join my dear friends Lexie and Melaina in spirit, as Lexie competes in the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant later this month. Good Luck Lexie, I know you will do very well!

See you all soon!

With Love,

Kayla Thomas

Summer fun!

What an eventful month!  It is hard to believe I am already in the first week of August and will be going to Orlando, Florida in less than three weeks to support my little sister, and Miss Colorado’s Outstanding Teen, Lexie O’Dowd as she competes for the title of Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.  She has worked so hard and I am very proud of her and always will be no matter the result of the competition!  I also get to meet my fellow Miss America contestants while I am in Florida for the teen competition and absolutely cannot wait to see what friendships await!

As Miss Colorado, in the month of July, I have had the privilege of participating in the 4th of July Parade in Vail, as I last blogged about, throwing out the first pitch for the Sky Sox baseball game in my hometown of Colorado Springs, shooting a commercial for our wonderful sponsors, Comfort Dental, appearing in Dancing with the Stars for the Adult Down Syndrome Clinic in Denver, attending and modeling in the “Be Beautiful, Be Yourself” Jet Set Fashion Show Kick-off Party at Saks Fifth Avenue as well as attending the YMCA Stars and Stripes Golf Tournament benefiting military families, and was featured as a celebrity guest at the Rocky Mountain State Games of America.

I feel so blessed to be a part of each and every one of these events and as always send an enormous thank you out to those who provided me with the opportunity to be a part of such extraordinary occasions.  As I walked onto the field to throw out the first pitch for the Sky Sox I was very nervous because I am a lacrosse player, not a softball player.  I can throw things much further with the assistance of my lacrosse stick!  Adrenaline really does play a part in performance because I made that ball fly through the air and it landed straight in the catcher’s mitt.  I was most certainly relieved that I did not embarrass myself by rolling the ball to home plate!  At the Dancing with the Stars event, I met so many incredible individuals that truly touched my heart.  I danced the Meringue and did the conga line with the best of them!  I had a ball dancing with everyone for hours as the night passed and the event went on.  Thank you all for making that night a marvelous memory to have experienced during my year.  I know I will see you all again soon.   The “Be Beautiful, Be Yourself” Jet Set Fashion Show Kick-off Party was a blast!  I got to walk down the runway with Dusty and Dylan and boy, did they know how to work the crowd and the runway!  I had the chance to meet a majority of the individuals that will be taking the runway with me in October at the BIG Fashion Show for Jet Set’s “Be Beautiful, Be Yourself” campaign.  I cannot wait to see you all in a few short months and to work that runway with you yet again!  At the YMCA Stars and Stripes Golf Tournament, I met many military families for which we were working to raise money through this program.  The money will go toward child care for military families that are on duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.  I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to this organization for helping these families through tough times as well as saying an even bigger thank you to all soldiers who serve this country with pride.  You are appreciated more than you will ever know.  Lastly, my most recent appearance was at the Rocky Mountain State Games of America.  I had the pleasure of meeting the Mayor of Colorado Springs, Lionel Rivera, Acrodunk from America’s Got Talent, American Idol singer, Kimberly Caldwell, and Olympic Gold Medalist in the USA Four Man Bobsledding Team, Steve Holcomb.  Steve even let me wear his Olympic Gold Medal, so I gave him collateral and let him wear my sash.  Talking to him was without doubt a breath of fresh air.  He was the most genuine, down-to-earth celebrity I have ever met.  Kimberly Caldwell was also very sweet and was so flattered when I commented on how beautiful I thought she was.  I thoroughly enjoy meeting people that have such a firm hold on life and understand that we are all just people.  We are all capable of having positive influence in our community, we just have to realize how to best put it to use.

As for July, it was a fantastic start to my title and my job as Miss Colorado 2010.  Again, thank you to everyone I referred to in my first blog as I could not have done this without you all supporting me and making me the best Melaina I could possibly be.  I simply cannot express how much these past six weeks have meant to me and I am ecstatic that I still have ten and a half months of this amazing life changing experience.  I could do this job forever, but I know I have to eventually share the crown.  Thank you all who read my blogs and keep up with everything taking place in my year as your representative for the beautiful state of Colorado.  165 days (not that I am counting) until Miss America 2011 is crowned…I hope to make you all proud!

Much love,

Melaina Shipwash

Miss Colorado 2010

Hello again everyone!

It has been two weeks of my reign as Miss Colorado 2010 and it has already been a fantastic whirlwind.  I have had several appearances that have been so amazing and I am very excited to see what the rest of this year has in store for me.  So far, I have had interviews with news stations, radio stations, newspapers, and websites.  I am definitely getting great practice before I start gearing up with mock interviews for Miss America!

The most recent appearance I did was in Vail for the July 4th America Days Parade where there are 30,000 spectators each year.  I was so honored to be asked to be the Grand Marshall of the parade, as the previous Grand Marshall was President Ford!  Prior to the parade, I had an interview with TV8 News and was featured on Good Morning Vail.  I also had the opportunity to meet and take pictures with several of the fire departments from Vail and surrounding areas.  It is always great to meet people who are role models in the community!  As the parade started, I sat on the back of a BMW convertible and made my way in and out of the parade trail.  They were not kidding when they said there would be 30,000 people watching from start to end!  The streets were packed with rows and rows of people lining up so far I could barely see them sometimes!  One particular moment that was extremely special for me was when they introduced me as the Grand Marshall.  I came around the corner and looked down the strip of a straight-away street and there were thousands of people lined up.  Over the loud speaker, they announced, “Now coming into view is our Grand Marshall of the parade, Miss Colorado 2010, Melaina Shipwash!  She will be competing in Las Vegas in January for the crown of Miss America 2011.  Good Luck, Melaina and we know you will make us all so proud!”  Then, they started playing “America the Beautiful” and everyone was clapping and yelling for me.  It was such an emotional moment (I know, surprise!) for me but that was the moment that it really sunk in and hit me.  I am Miss Colorado 2010 and I have a chance to be Miss America 2011!  Not only that, but I have so many people behind me that have never personally met me.  It meant so much to me to have the entire crowd of thousands of people stop everything they were doing to clap and cheer for me as I was driven down the street.  It made me feel like I had an impact on so many people in just that one moment.  That is what being Miss Colorado is about…making a difference and impacting people in my community in a positive way.  I had so much fun and I am very thankful to have had this experience!

In addition to the parade, I also had the opportunity to attend Ed McCaffrey’s Dare to Play football game to benefit the Global Down Syndrome Foundation which touched my heart in many ways.  These Special Olympians worked very hard and trained for two full days in football and cheerleading prior to this big event!  They all did such a great job playing football and cheering on the sidelines.   I enjoyed meeting each and every one of you and I want you to know that you are truly inspiring and wonderful athletes!  Because of you all, I may go out and try a little football myself!

Thank you to everyone who has helped put together these incredible events and thank you also to my supporters!  You are all such amazing people and I am blessed to have the opportunity to work with you.

Best wishes,
Melaina Shipwash

Wow, I can’t believe I am writing to you all right now as the newly crowned Miss Colorado 2010!  It is still very surreal but I could not possibly be more excited and anxious to start my year of service.  I feel so blessed and grateful to have this opportunity and am trying to find a slow motion button to press for my year to be able to take it all in!  I would like to start by saying thank you to everyone who supported me in my journey to become Miss Colorado 2010.  Now, I am blessed to have you all, as the road continues as I prepare to compete for the title and the greatly desired job of Miss America 2011, on January 12th-15th at the Planet Hollywood hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.  I am also very excited to tell those of you who have not heard that the Miss America 2011 Pageant will be airing live on January 15th on ABC!

There are many people to which I would like to express my deepest gratitude, so please bare with me, as this may be a long one!  Thank you so much to my family and dear friends.  I know it wasn’t easy watching me try on every outfit I could possibly combine from each piece of clothing in my closet.  I probably ended up wearing something that didn’t even match because we all got so tired of asking and hearing, “Does this look like something Miss Colorado would wear?”  Mom and Dad, thank you for helping me get and keep everything in order as well as taking the overflow of my preparations and ensuring me that everything would be all right.  You are the most amazing parents in the world and I love you both from the bottom of my heart.  Thank you also for going to what seemed like endless stores looking for the perfect swimsuit, opening number shoes, and interview dresses with me.  It never hurts to have a back up to a back up!  Brittany, thank you for being such a great sister and supporting me no matter what; and you are welcome for giving you an excuse to go to Las Vegas.  James, thank you for your incredible patience with me as I prepared for this competition.  This will be a life changing year and I’m so glad to have you by my side as my best friend.  Thank you to my Producer/Choreographer and Executive Director, Katee and Suzi.  You two are the most magnificent people in the world and I can’t express in words how excited I am to spend the next year working closely with you.  Keely, you made me the best Melaina I could be for this competition and I know I will continue to grow and change as I run with anticipation toward the crown of Miss America 2011.  Because of the resources with which you have provided me, I was able to achieve my dream and now I’m going after the next one!  Lisa, my dance was so much fun this year and I could not have been beaming with a smile through the whole thing without you.  You are an extremely talented choreographer and not to mention a great listener when my life is all over the place.  Thank you for sharing your gift of dance and talent with me.  To everyone in the crowd that was cheering me on, you have no idea how much it means to me to have you with me.  With each cheer, I knew I had people looking up to me and having faith in my ability to wear the crown and do the job of Miss Colorado 2010; and do this job, I will!  To my princesses, the four of you melt my heart every time I think about you.  Having you girls escort me for evening gown was the highlight of my night and you all looked so beautiful in your “aqua” dresses!  I look forward to spending time with each and every one of you throughout my year and for the rest of our lives.  To Katie Layman, having you crown me meant more to me than you will ever know.  I look up to you and have been inspired by your year of service and your performance on the national stage at Miss America 2010.  I will do my absolute best to fill your shoes as the new Miss Colorado.  David and Carry from Regalia, thank you for my gorgeous evening gown!  I felt so beautiful every time I put it on and it was the perfect dress for me!  I’m so glad I get to continue to work with the two of you, just as long as you keep calling me “trouble.” Don Baker, thank you for the highly valuable training sessions and for teaching me how to have a wonderful interview while being “just Melaina.”  To my sponsors, thank you for sticking with me and supporting me with ad pages for the past three years as I’ve competed for this title.  To my new 2010 sisters, Lexie and Kayla, we have such a fun year ahead of us.  I am so glad to be along side the two of you.  You both are so beautiful as well as genuine and deserve the best that this year has to offer.  To the girls I competed with, this title means so much more to me knowing that I have competed with the best.  You are all truly talented women and I hope this organization has done as much for you as it has done for me.  Press on and pursue your dreams as you all have great potential to be the next Miss Colorado.  Lastly, but most certainly not least, thank you to my panel of wonderful judges.  The five of you have changed my life forever and have helped me fulfill one of my life long dreams and goals.  I will represent Colorado proudly and to the best of my ability at Miss America and I will make each of you proud…that is a promise!  Thank you for this job and thank you for believing in me.  I will be keeping everyone posted as my year continues with appearances and community involvement, and as I prepare to compete at nationals in six short months!

Thank you again to you all,
Melaina Shipwash

Lexie O'Dowd

Hey guys!! Wow this is my first blog as your new Miss Colorado's Outstanding Teen and I just can't thank Christ and so many people enough for this opportunity that was given to me! I competed last Thursday, Friday, and then on Saturday my life was changed, as I  was crowned and will follow in the amazing Janelle Orsborn's steps as your new title holder. The girls I competed against were awesome I couldn't have asked to be with a better group of girls, and each one of them deserved this title just as much as me! They are all OUTSTANDING girls with charisma, kind hearted, and truly passionate about life. I definitely had an amazing weekend all together at the Elle and it was a life changing experience that I will never forget. The quote that truly inspired me throughout this competition was from Philippians 4:13 which says "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." This verse was kind of like a voice record in the back of my head playing over and over again, but now I know why. The Lord was telling me that I can do all things through him. I still hold on to this quote and throughout my journey this entire year it will help me to remember that I can make a difference in people's lives, and influence others through Christ. I also was blessed with this opportunity and as I look to my future this year as Miss Colorado's Outstanding Teen I hope to have no regrets and truly represent Colorado through positive leadership and influencing others to believe in accomplishing their dreams!

I would like to thank a few people that truly helped me accomplish this dream of becoming your Miss Colorado's Outstanding Teen. First of all to my mom. Wow such an amazing women she is, her dedication and determination she had towards helping me accomplish this goal was not replaceable and I can't thank her enough for being at my side constantly through this journey. Next to my daddy, those days sitting in your office going over interview questions is a memory I will never forget and thank you for constantly supporting me and loving me every single day of my life! To me brothers Christopher and Jack, you two are my role models you constantly remind me what a servant of God truly is and thank you so much for being there for me through this whole journey. Katee and Suzi, wow I don't think a state could ask for better directors than you guys! Thank you so much for all your time and work put into making this competition truly spectacular, I cannot wait for this year filled with memories with you two! All the volunteers, God know how I would have been able to get on that dress without you guys! Thank you so much for the time you put into helping all of us girls and your constant support back stage!! To all my sponsors thank you for supporting me, and the Miss Colorado Organization, I truly appreciate your generosity. Lisa, you are my second mom and I am so blessed to grow as close as I did with you this entire experience. Thanks so much for making my dance great, love you!! Keely, wow what an amazing, positive, and beautiful women you are!! Thank you for everything you truly helped me to compete to my best, and helped me be the best Lexie O'Dowd that I could be. Melaina, thank you for your continuous support and your advice on my dance, I cannot wait to spend a year with an amazing Miss Colorado like you!! Janelle, an image of God is what you truly are. Your legacy as Miss Colorado's Outstanding Teen will never be forgotten, you have truly set an example of what an Outstanding Teen and role model should be! Thank you for your support already and the awesome day I spent with you watching MAOT from last year, I truly could not ask to follow in someone's footsteps as great as you. Lastly to Christ for giving me this opportunity to truly act as a servant of God and changing the hearts of others throughout my year as Miss Colorado's Outstanding Teen. I hope to make everyone proud and to represent this amazing state in a memorable way! Off to Orlando to the National Pageant in six weeks, I will keep everyone updated on my journey.

It has almost been one week since I received the title of Miss Colorado Teen, and it still seems surreal to me! This past weekend was a blast! The Ellie Caulkins Opera House was such a beautiful place!  I had so much fun being able to just have fun and be myself on the incredible stage! I have gained so much from my experience already, I cannot wait for what is to come. I have gained more than just self-confidence, I have gained something better; friendship. All of the other contestants, whether they were  Miss, Outstanding Teen, or  Teen, were such a great help to me! I have been so blessed to have been able to meet these wonderful people, and I know they will be my friends/sisters forever!

I couldn’t have received this title without the help of many others:

Mom: Thank you so much! You have been my role model throughout my entire life. Without you, I couldn’t have achieved anything. Thank you for putting in the endless hours of hard work and supporting me with everything I do.  I love you so much!

Dad, Brian and Trent: I know that sometimes you don’t understand this whole thing, but I think you are starting to get the idea J.

To my beautiful mentor, Shalon:   Thank you! You have helped me so much.  I certainly believe you helped me find my best me!

To all of my friends, family and sponsors:  Thank you for believing in me!   I love you all!

Christi:  My local director, helped me fall in love with the idea of becoming Miss Colorado Teen.

Suzi, Wayne and Katee: The state pageant was fantastic! You all did a wonderful job and I have gained so much from this program. Thank you for this AMAZING opportunity!

Comfort Dental: Your endless support has helped the program get where it is today. Thank you so much for all you have done. You are all awesome!

Katie Layman, Janelle Orsborn and Stacey Cook: You have made Colorado proud! All of you are amazing young women and I thank you for all that you have done. I hope I make you proud too!

Melaina and Lexie: Wow! I am so excited to be able to call you my sisters! I am so looking forward to this year, and spending lots of time with the both of you! We are going to have so much fun!

I cannot believe that I am writing an end to my first blog. I could honestly write 20 more pages of people who I would like to thank. I could never have gotten to where I am without the help of all of you!   I know I have big shoes to fill, but I hope that I make everyone proud!  Thank you for all of your support! I promise to keep writing, and I am looking forward to it! See you soon!

With Love,
Kayla Thomas
